Becoming less and less common, BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend remains one of the standout free festivals in the country. The ballot event began in 2003 and alters location throughout the UK each May.
While there have been many suggestions that the ballot format is biased and postal staff stole tickets on previous occasions, a reform to the system where 55% of tickets go to the residents of the host city and 45% go to nearby residents.
Featuring performers from pop, rap, rock, indie and grime genres, the festival features the big hitters of the current music charts. Ranging from indie newcomers to pop royalty, BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend ensures a star studded line-up.
With three packed stages over two days, past notable acts from this event include Jay-Z, Rihanna, The Strokes and Kasabian. These huge names are mixed with the best DJ’s BBC Radio 1 have to offer, with the likes of Annie Mac and Zane Lowe featuring over the weekend.
This year, the BBC are bringing Katy Perry, Stormzy, Little Mix and King of Leon with them to Hull’s Constable Hall on the 27th and 28th of May. While tickets for this event have been distributed already, it is advised to stay up to date on the BBC R1 Big Weekend website and social media pages for information on last minute ticket information.
